By Justin Labato, CD-SV, RT
If you have your ear to the pulse of the professional detailing industry today, especially among our members, you may have noticed that there are more and more high-profile events that gather teams of professional detailers from around the world. Such events might involve a coordinated team of pre-selected detailers that gather at a historic museum or upscale car show to provide services. How do you get involved in such events? It really comes down to participating in your industry as much as possible and making connections with some of the leaders who put together these events.
So how do you get involved? Well, there are a number of ways.
First, there is an increasing number of IDA “Meet and Greet” informal gatherings to bring both members and non-members together in support of each other. Check out the IDA website for announcements of such events in your area. Many professionals in our community are traveling long distances for IDA-related events. These individuals have an understanding that connecting with fellow professionals, both in formal and informal settings, is a great way to solve problems, gather information, and energize their psyches and businesses. | Board Member Spotlight |
|
Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with IDA Board Member Bob Myers, CD-SV, RT, Midwest Sales Representative for BAF Industries - Pro Products, an IDA Founder's Club member.
International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?
Bob Myers (BM): I always took care of my vehicles at a young age. My friends and neighbors always asked me to clean and wax their cars like mine and, of course, I didn’t charge them anything. It was just fun and rewarding to make something look new again. At this time, I never knew there was a business or people who actually did this for a living. I did some research and decided to give up my construction career and start a detailing service, for money.
IDA: How has your career evolved?
BM: Along with owning my successful detail shop for 12 years, I also found myself teaching or guiding others on detailing. I sold my business and started detail consulting for a chain of dealerships and collision shops. After doing this for for or five years, I had the opportunity to work for a product distributor as a route salesman. I did this for six years and had an opportunity to go to work for the product Manufacturer (BAF Industries-PRO® Products) as a regional salesman.
IDA: Why did you decide to get involved with the IDA Board?
BM: I have always been around the key playmakers in the detailing industry since its birth. I was nominated by my supervisor and VP of BAF Industries, John Bell. I feel the need to continue teaching and giving back to an industry that has rewarded me for the last 38 years. I’m honored to be part of the IDA and serve as a board member. (Read more)

| Work Smarter, Not Harder. Did Someone Say Credit? |

By Daniel Baker, CD
Treasurer, IDA Board of Directors
President, Ziebart Corporation
When you think about growing your detailing sales, do you think about it as detailing more vehicles in a day, week, month, or year? Or do you think about raising your average ticket (selling price)? A business key performance indicator (K.P.I.) that everyone should be aware of is your invoice average ticket. Your average ticket is your sales divided by the number of vehicles invoiced over a period of time.
Most detail shops set their selling prices by doing a competitive survey of their market. This is a good practice; however, it’s not just price that you should focus on, you also need to understand what your competitors are doing (i.e. what does a service include, are they IDA certified or Skills Validated) for the prices they charge.
