President's Letter

By Jonathan Munsell, CD, 2019 IDA President

As we sit here with June rapidly approaching, I am sure this message hits you while you are busy focused on your customers and cranking out tons of business.  If that is the case than the message I share below might have come just in time.

Before I get into that, I wanted to share with you some of the exciting happenings as we move into the middle of the year (yes, by the time I write my next letter 2019 will be half way gone).  At this moment the IDA is on fire!! We have events going on all over the world.  Members are getting together and sharing ideas, helping one another, and raising the bar of the detailing industry - as the entire world sees it.

Sharing the IDA message is super important and even though I have almost 12 events scheduled for me to attend in the United States this year. I am also in the final stages of planning a European trip which will include stops in the UK, France, and Norway – at all of the stops I will be representing the IDA. More to come on that real soon.  The excitement and energy I get from our members is absolutely amazing!!  With that being said, I look at all our members as the clients I serve as the President of the IDA.  Please allow me to share my thoughts on the importance of that relationship.

You Must Understand the Importance of a Relationship with Your Clients Versus Just Having Customers.

Client versus Customer. A client implies an ongoing relationship, hospitality that we welcome someone - we want them to come back, we treat them special and make them feel welcome. (Read More)

IDA Member Spotlight

Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with the chair of the Tradeshow & Education CommitteeRahul Dahiya, CD-SV, owner of Shield and Sheen in Robbinsville, New Jersey.

Rahul Dahiya

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?

Rahul Dahiya (RD): My passion for detailing started with my first car in high school. I was hooked when I saw each detailing issue with that first car. And then teaching myself how to resolve those issues with different products and tools was so rewarding. As I gained experience and knowledge I started assisting friends and neighbors.

IDA: Tell us a bit about your business.

RD: As I mentioned before, assisting friends and neighbors lead to bigger things. I would detail part time over the weekends and then slowly gained a decent customer base. This soon transitioned into Shield and Sheen. Where we would detail part time and also received professional training. We now have a fixed location in Central New Jersey.

IDA Recertification – Not As Scary As It Sounds!

What a wonderful feeling! You just completed your IDA certification, your certificate is on its way to you as you patiently wait to frame it and mount it above your counter, and your official IDA patches will soon be proudly placed on your sleeve for you to wear with pride!

THIS is an accomplishment to be proud of, and THIS is something you can be proud of for the rest of your life. What comes next though? Something that many people tend to lose sight of in the excitement of becoming certified, is that achieving IDA certification comes with high standards, high regard, and continued education. The IDA requires that all CD, CD-SV, and CD-SV, Recognized Trainers must submit for recertification every 2-years from their original certification date. This means that everyone has 730 days to establish 8 hours of continued education experience. (Read more)

Strategy
Be Careful of Who You Follow

By Vincent Macri, CD-SV

With the detailing industry rapidly growing, many detailing related businesses are growing also. Detailing product companies, clothing companies, accessories and more. Many detailers are starting to think outside the box and planning on what they will do with their future once its time to put the polisher down. Face it, eventually our hands, eyes and body just won’t be what they are today and we won’t be able to keep up with the younger generation. We all need an exit strategy. Combine that with today’s hype over personal development, business development and self-help, many detailers see an opportunity to become a “business mentor” and create programs to sell to detailers to turn a profit. (Read More)
