President's Letter

By Jonathan Munsell, CD, 2019 IDA President

My monthly message to the best detailers, suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors in the world.

As we approach the end of 2019, let's touch on the topic of how detailers are constantly on the hunt for new customers and seem to ignore the ones they’ve already established.

Keeping “In Touch”…Forever

Are you doing everything you can to keep in touch with your customers so the next time they need your services they remember who you are, what you do, and where to find you?

Ask yourself:

  • Will your past customers call you the next time they have a question or need another job?  Or will they call someone else?
  • Will they refer a friend or relative to you, even though maybe you’ve not made the slightest effort to stay in touch with them?

From my experience, it is not likely.  You may have a few customers that stay with you, but most will move on.

Remember: Out of sight, out of mind.  (Read more)

IDA Member Spotlight

Each month we feature a Member Spotlight.  This month we're talking with the President of the IDA Norway Chapter, Faruk Prnjavorac, CD-SV, owner of INSANITY Detailing.

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?

Faruk Prnjavorac (FP): When I was a kid, on Sundays I had my washing and hand polishing sessions with my old man.  That escalated into proper washing and waxing of my stanced car, but it really blossomed when I tried to paint the car myself – it was so much more rewarding correcting it afterwards than it was to apply the paint.

IDA: Tell us a bit about your business.

FP: INSANITY Detailing started out as a hobby, but demand and my pursuit for the ultimate finish made it into a registered company in 2016.  It was a one-man, part-time, weekend warrior business for the first three years.  In 2019, I was at a low point and decided to go all in.  Today I have the local Audi dealership with me, along with my regulars.

IDA: Why did you decide to get involved with the IDA?

FP: IDA stands for an ethic and a standard in workmanship in my line of work.  I saw the IDA as a way to improve the business as a whole in Norway, and help others build up their business.  (Read more)

Quarterly Committee Updates

Membership Committee

This past quarter the Membership Committee focused on polishing off a couple of large projects left over from 2018.

The “New Member Orientation Video” was wrapped and polished by Jason Rose, CD-SV, RT, with the video production generously donated by The Rag Company.  This is an instructional video to help familiarize new members with the benefits of their IDA membership, navigate the IDA website, and meet the volunteers who make up our committees and Board of Directors.

A dealership member sub-category was created and will be live on the IDA website in the coming weeks continuing to expand the reach for detailing professionalism.

Initiatives to increase IDA Membership have been successful as our ranks worldwide continue to grow.  Jason Rose, CD-SV, RT, has also been instrumental with the development of IDA Chapter growth.

We are currently looking for volunteers who can manage two to three hours a month and help move the IDA forward into the future!  Chair and Co-chair positions are open come January 2021.

Shine On!

Joseph DiFiore, CD-SV, Membership Committee Chair

Chapter Development Committee

There has been lots of activity and progress with existing and new chapters!

China: Applications for new IDA Chapters in China have been received this month and are currently under review by the IDA Board of Directors.

South East Asia: A massive effort is under way to create an IDA Chapter representing many countries in South East Asia.  Representatives from each country have been identified that represent detailers and suppliers for the initial founding Board of Directors for the Chapter.  Look for all of this to come together soon.

IDA representatives were in Dubai; Sydney, Australia; and Auckland, New Zealand this month to discuss IDA chapter creation and development with local detailers and suppliers:

  • Dubai – interest from local detailers and suppliers to create a local IDA Chapter.  Undetermined about the scope of the desired chapter; it could be just one local market, or cover all United Arab Emirates.  An IDA Recognized Trainer already exists in the area, and certification activity is happening locally already.
  • Australia – significant interest by detailers and suppliers.  It is looking like the minimum required companies to create a chapter could come together shortly.  It only takes five founding companies and 30 members to get it started!  Hopefully they will pull it together soon.
  • New Zealand – has an IDA Chapter already.  Interest and commitment to developing a mutually supportive detailing community is growing.  It is a small market and detailing community, but more detailers and suppliers are stepping up to support the detailing community through IDA activities and certification.

The United Kingdom Chapter is currently going through a leadership change.  They are seeking individuals and companies in the UK that want to step into leadership positions and committee positions to help grow the IDA in the UK.  They are currently the largest IDA Chapter outside of the Untied States!

Norway Chapter has just reorganized with new leadership and is gaining momentum with local IDA activity and events.

These are very exciting developments!  If you want a chapter in your country, or want to volunteer to be involved in your local IDA Chapter, please contact us!

Jason Rose, CD-SV, RT, Chapter Development Committee Chair and Board Liaison

Marketing and Communications Committee

It’s hard to believe that 2019 is almost over!  As we continue into the 4th quarter, the Marketing and Communications Committee is aiming to complete our yearly goals and already planning for the next year.  We have consistently grown our audience on both Facebook and Instagram, had a couple members create some great video content, and have added some valuable volunteers to our committee.

Over the next few weeks, we plan to finish the year strong by rolling out a new “Consumer Awareness” section to our website and work with some of our sponsors and suppliers to create a contest where we ask members to contribute a short video testimonial explaining why they feel the IDA is important.  The purpose for these two projects is to build brand awareness among more professional detailers as well as vehicle owners who may be in the market to get their vehicles detailed.  The new section on the website can serve as a tool that our members can use to educate their customer and ultimately close more sales.

Lastly, we have sent out surveys to our sponsors in order to get feedback on our existing sponsorship packages.  We are looking to gather as much data as possible in order to provide the highest level of value that we can to our sponsors.  We are working on creating an updated sponsorship package that should be rolling out just in time for 2020.

For those attending SEMA, feel free to take pictures and videos of the IDA Meet and Greet and other networking events and share them with us on social media!

IDA Recertification – Don’t Wait!

By Alex Hazard, IDA Certification & Education Coordinator

The dreaded recertification process that everybody knows about, but nobody wants to talk about, is much simpler than most people anticipate.  This article is coming from a lot of recent inquiries from IDA Certified Detailers who have reached their 2-year mark, and it is now time to re-certify.  Unfortunately, in most of these cases, we have run into issues of trying to cram in 8-hours of continuing education credits in order to re-certify before the prices goes up.  If you are taking the time to read this article, thank you.  Please take the information in this article and apply it to your life so that you can avoid any headaches when it comes time to re-certify.  (Read more)

Strategy
The Relationship Between Advertising and Online Reviews

By Ken Daubenspeck, CD

Many operators of brick-and-mortar detail shops and mobile operations spend their hard earned dollars advertising to promote and grow their business.  They spend their money advertising through social media platforms like Facebook, using paid search, Google Ad Words (pay-per-click), Direct Mail, Print Ads, Radio, Cable TV, and more.  While it is good that they promote their business through advertising, many operators are overlooking a business reality that can negatively impact or disrupt their business and drastically reduce the effectiveness of the investment they are making in advertising.

That business reality or disruptor is online reviews!  If your business has few or no reviews – or worse yet bad reviews – these can lead to a low Google Star Ranking which will negatively affect your advertising and hurt your business, especially today with the changing demographics of our detailing target customer.  The change from our traditional customers (Baby Boomers) to the younger Gen Xers and Millennials is having an impact on the way consumers research businesses that they have never been to before.  Gen Xers and Millennials typically will go online and research a business before they will do business with them.  The research they do is to read online reviews about the business.  Negative online reviews will turn these younger generations away from doing business with you.  If they read negative reviews online, they won’t even bother calling you.  (Read more)

IDA Website Spotlight: Consumer Awareness

Members often ask us what they can do to promote professional detailing to consumers to make them more aware of the importance of working with a true professional.  So we put together a short list of simple actions you can take as an individual to begin creating consumer awareness on a local level (click here to view the full list).

However, we understand that an essential part of the IDA’s mission to "promote the success and growth of the professional detailing community" is to increase awareness of the industry and our organization among the general public on a large scale.

With that in mind, we are pleased to announce the new area of our website dedicated solely to educating consumers on the detailing process, the importance of working with a professional, and how to find and contact professional detailers, i.e. you, our members and Certified Detailers.

The new section can be found from the home page "Find an IDA Detailer" button, or via the "Find a Detailer" tab in the main menu.  Please feel free to bookmark and share a link to this page on your own website, social media, or wherever it would be most helpful to you and your business.

Click here for a section-by-section breakdown of the webpage We hope this area of the website becomes a valuable resource to you and your clients!
