| President's Letter |

By Jonathan Munsell, CD, 2019 IDA President
My monthly message to the best detailers, suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors in the world.
I’ve been back now for a month from the most amazing IDA trip EVER!!!!
If you haven’t heard, I had the honor of traveling to visit our chapters in the United Kingdom and Norway, and I was in Paris for the launch of our France Chapter.
I was traveling with Alan Medcraf, who I affectionately refer to as an “International Detailing Rockstar”. The trip was super successful and in this issue, you will find more details and pictures from our travels, so be sure to check that out.
Before I jump into my monthly “Build a Better Detailing Business” mode, I wanted my HUGE thanks to everyone to be front and center of this issue.
I want to thank EVERYONE that made “The 2019 IDA European Tour” possible. I mean everyone, the individual countries and chapters for all the coordination and amazing hospitality, the office staff at the IDA that made all the arrangements and led the event advertising and registration, the IDA Board of Directors for having the foresight and commitment to our members to put their faith in Alan and I to carry this super important initiative forward. And lastly, I want to thank all the members who came out, disrupted their businesses and lives to spend time meeting us, furthering their education and accomplishing the highly impressive result of Certification and Skills Validation!
I take my hat off to everyone that supported this trip!! Thank you so much!! (Read more)

| 2019 IDA European Tour Recap! |
|

By Jonathan Munsell, CD, 2019 IDA President
Titled like a rock concert “European Tour” is probably the right vibe for this most recent trip. I don’t know how they, Rockstars, do it. Hopping city to city, performing, engaging the audience, and wrapping it all up just to do it again in a different place tomorrow is no easy task.
The Rockstar part of the trip for us was the MEMBERS!! They are the real rockstars in this story.
This is a very exciting time for the IDA! We continue to grow in the United States as well as around the world. So, this year we decided to really put the “I” in the IDA with an “International Mission” to show up and support our chapters and their members in the UK, France, and Norway. (Read more)

| IDA Member Spotlight |
|
Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with the chair of the Certification Committee, Kyle Clark, CD-SV, owner of Xtreme Detailing in Fontana, California.
|

|
International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?
Kyle Clark (KC): I found my calling of cleaning and polishing cars before I turned 12. I found so much enjoyment making paint shine. By the time I was 13, people were dropping off their cars for me to clean after school and on weekends.
As a 14-year-old I asked for a Porter Cable buffer rather than a designer dress shirt for my birthday. With that powerful machine in my hands, I realized that I could do things aesthetically with a vehicle's paint that I had never been able to do before.
IDA: Tell us a bit about your business.
KC: I thought that I would be following in the footsteps of my father and brother in law enforcement. But my love of cleaning automobiles led me to follow one of my passions, auto detailing. I purchased a 5’ x 8’ trailer and a 200-gallon water tank, a commercial carpet extractor, an EZ-Up speed shelter, a European steamer, some extra buffers, a supply of professional detailing products, and I took my show on the road! | Is Certification a Sure Thing? |
|
This month we decided it would be beneficial to address one of the more frequently asked questions about IDA certification events – “If I go to this event, am I guaranteed to pass?”. As convenient as it would be to answer yes to this question, the answer is no. While the IDA has so much faith in the knowledge of all IDA Recognized Trainers (RTs), it is important to note that certification events are not training events. When you sign up for a certification event, it is important that you are prepared to take and pass the exam when you arrive. RTs are often willing to assist with questions and attempt to help you in the best way they can, but the main purpose is to test the knowledge and skills that you currently possess. (Read more)

| The Changing Customer Journey |
|
By Dan Baker, CD, IDA Treasurer
Ziebart Corporation, Troy, Michigan
As 2020 approaches one of the biggest changes and challenges we face as business people, is our changing customer demographic. We are moving from Baby Boomers as our primary customer, to the younger Generation X and Millennials. To be successful with Gen X and Millennials you will have to change the customer journey in your business as well as they way that you talk to them.
Baby Boomers were the “How” generation. They wanted to know how we do things, how we remove stains, what kind of equipment we use to extract dirt and soap when cleaning interiors. They want to know how we wash the car, how we polish paint and what kind of equipment we use. Boomers felt that if you could explain technically how you do the job, that this proved your professionalism. (Read more)

| Website Tips & Tricks: Recertification |
|
Recertification is required of Certified Detailers at all levels as a part of certification and skill maintenance.
What is recertification?
Recertification is the process of maintaining your certification, which is required if you wish to keep your credentials of Certified Detailer, Skills Validated, or Recognized Trainer. To maintain your certification, you must complete 8 full hours of detailing-related continuing education over a two-year period beginning with the month of your initial certification. You will receive one CD credit hour for each full clock hour of a qualifying program with a max of 4 credit hours per calendar day. (MTE's Education Day is the only exception to this.) (Read more)
