Holy Cow. It's the end of February. Where does the time go? I hope this new year is working out the way you planned.
I'm going to share a video with everyone. It's a little bit more of my insights on involvement. Please take a few minutes and listen to it, watch it, and certainly do get involved. As always, please reach out to me, connect with me on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, whatever works for you, and let's continue to move this association forward, grow, be strong, and be internationally recognized as the source for detail information and education. I have been working my plan and I want to share some of the details with you. I feel it’s my responsibility to connect with as many members of our association as I possibly can. I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed with how many people have reached out to me. The feedback has been hugely positive. Most feel so strongly about the IDA and the direction that we're heading, and these are folks from all over the world.
The reality is the association does not exist without you. For a while, I like many of you was a member that wasn't very involved. Once I truly got involved is when I really started to understand the power of the IDA. First I became a member, then I became certified and once I had that inside knowledge, I kept going and got involved with committees. Ultimately joining the board of directors. On the board I became Vice President for Operators and now the President. I feel I have a lot of inside knowledge that I certainly didn't have before. But the reality of the association is that it's really here for us and its members working to help the entire detailing community.

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?
Levi Gates (LG): Truthfully … I was born into it; my parents were detailing to make some extra money on the side and my Mom loves to tell everyone how she would wax cars with me hanging from a carrier or sling attached to her chest or back. I started at a local carwash, I was 16. About 1 mile away from my current office here at TRC. I started the same way most do and work my way up until I managed a team of 30 employees by 18. From there, I managed, trained and operated a few local detail shops until I opened my own shop in 2011. I moved on to The Rag Company in January of 2017.
IDA: Please tell us about "The Rag Company."
LG: The Rag Company has been producing some of the finest Microfiber towels and products since 1999. We are a family run business, owned by Carolyn and Jeff Hennen, which operated out of a 2-car garage for several years, before moving into our large distribution facility. With the advent of social media and YouTube we have been able to “preach the gospel” of microfiber across the world!
IDA: In what products or services does your company specialize?
LG: Premium Microfiber and Media Marketing, as well as hands on training and events. (Read more)

| Second Annual Love Your Detailer Day |

Love Your Detailer Day (LYDD) has once again come and gone and will not end just because our special industry day is over. Our IDA members will increase, as the awareness for who we are and what we are about continues to perpetuate itself forward. The pro detailer love will continue with each and every passing day. IDA detailers, manufacture’s and distributors are passionate people about promoting auto detailing as an industry and a trade. As Detailers, we are much more than a cosmetic car care and surface specialist, we are a labor movement!
Yes, a labor movement! We come from all walks of life, race, creed and color, we are in fifty-two countries worldwide. Many of the detailers from around the world I have spoken to have sought out this industry for a variety of reasons. The common thread I have discovered is dissatisfaction with the alternative choices, a job! From those who are car nuts to those who love the challenge of restoring the cosmetic beauty of paint, metal and fabrics this is a freedom second to none. We are a breed all our own and with much pride and love for our craft we have once again flooded social media for the second year in a row. Love Your Detailer Day!
There is much to love about the professional detailer of yesteryear and today. There was once a time back in the seventies before the consumer vanity trend exploded when business owners, high paid white-collar workers and car enthusiasts were the primary people who had their cars cleaned and shined. Detailing best described for those times was, wash and wax with interior care that was either vacuumed and wiped down or scrubbed with some nasty high alkaline APC, a bucket of water and a scrub brush. As you may have noticed, the IDA is looking to become more active on social media. One of our plans to help gain traction within our industry is to share your story on Facebook and Instagram. We are asking our members to help us create content by responding to our short survey below. You have the option to type up responses to the questions and send them back in with a couple high quality headshots of you, your IDA Certification, your facility or a picture of you at work with your IDA patches visible. The other option is to choose a few questions that you would like to respond to and create a short dialogue and record a video of your response.

| Decision Making and Opportunity Cost |

We all have the same number of hours in each day, but are we getting the same utility out of those hours? What does an hour of our used time cost? What does an hour of our lost time cost? Are they the same?
As soon as we hear the word “cost,” we attach a negative connotation. The ability to make informed decisions on exchanging costs for ideas, plans, and opportunity is crucial in growing one’s business. This exchange is described as “Opportunity Cost”. Could a minor profit earning decision result in neglecting an opportunity to earn twice as much profit? What does the time dedicated on one thing cost the company’s growth or lost family time? Let’s discuss the relativity of opportunity cost to our growing detailing industry.
Opportunity Basics
Opportunity Cost is what’s given up when a decision is made. It can be measured in time, money, equipment utilization, per person hours, energy, and more. The cost of a package of rags may be $20 literally, but as a business decision, could that $20 have been invested in Facebook advertising resulting in $200 of lost profit opportunity?
Think about when we wake up for the day; do we stay in bed, or do we get ready for the work day? The cost of staying in bed is the potential money to be earned that day, training to be provided to employees generating lower cycle times and greater efficiencies, or even the happiness to be gained playing with the dog in the park. If we choose to get out of bed, our cost is the additional rest; which results in less working hours, but could result in sharper focus, leading to greater individual efficiency of the lesser hours.
