President's Letter

My monthly message to the best detailers, suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors in the world.

We are heading into the 4th quarter of the year.  This time of year has always been a defining moment in every business that I have built. 

It’s time to “Finish Strong”.  Just like a football team, when it is late in the game, it is time to rally and drive home a serious win. This is a good time of year to get a bit of motivation and fire up everyone around you. You have three good months until we are deep into Christmas and New Year’s. You can make a huge impact on your business and your financials just by picking it up a little this time of year.

People follow your lead. If they see you pushing hard and you encourage them to do the same, they will pick it up, if even just a little. That little push in your organization could mean an extra $1000 or more easily. How much better would the holidays be around your house if you had that extra cash? It doesn’t take a miracle, just a little discipline and determination.

Take a minute and review the goals that you set at the beginning of the year.  Are you on track?  Do you need to make some changes to get the results you planned on?  Now is the time to take some personal time, pick your head up from all the work you have been doing and make sure that you achieve what you set out to do in 2019.

Not a sermon, just some real thoughts.

IDA Member Spotlight

Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with the President of the IDA France Chapter, Erwan Gouriou, CD-SV, CEO at Gtechniq France.

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?

Erwan Gouriou (EG): Cars always been a passion of mine and after a career in the cinema industry (movie theaters), I decided to live out my passion and get into PDR. From there I went into detailing because I had a lot of requests, as it was quite new in France.

IDA: Tell us a bit about your business.

EG: I started as a detailer and I quickly became interested in the Gtechniq coatings after I started working with it. One day, Rob Earle, Gtechniq managing director, called me, he was looking for a detailer team to work on RM Sotheby's car auction in Paris. It was the beginning of my collaboration with Gtechniq. Today I am a Gtechniq distributor for France and I run the accreditation program for several countries in Europe (doing audits, trainings, and accreditations). I have a network of 51 detailers in Europe and in the French territories, Caribbean, and South East of Africa. I also manage the RM Sotheby's car auction Gtechniq teams in Paris, Monaco, and Essen in Germany.

The IDA at MTE Las Vegas

For those of you that did not make the trip to Mobile Tech Las Vegas this year, I have some advice for you in regard to what you should next year…go! The IDA had a substantial presence at MTE Vegas and met a lot of new people that had never made the trip to Orlando! While the size comparison between MTE Vegas and MTE Orlando is substantial, the opportunity for growth is incredible, and the members of the IDA that attended this year can attest to that. I had the privilege of meeting so many incredible new people that all seemed perplexed that the IDA was not as big as it should be in their area. Some people had no idea what the IDA was because they have never known anyone that is associated with it and they work in the car care industry! (Read more)

In his new role, Bob will oversee sales and marketing for the professional power tool manufacturer, beginning with the launch of UDOS, the world’s first 5-in-1 professional polisher for the detailing market. (Read more)

How Much Should I Charge?

If you're not a stranger to any of the Facebook detailing pages then you know there are a handful of questions that get asked over and over. Sometimes it's about which ceramic coating is best or how to deal with an unhappy customer but most commonly there is one question that gets asked just about every day. For every time that question is asked, there are always multiple answers with no real  insight to help the one asking determine which answer may be best for them. The question is: How much do I charge for a service?

For being such a simple question, one may hope for a simple answer. Unfortunately it's a bit complicated. What I charge in Connecticut may not work for somebody in Oklahoma, California, or even one town over. Different business models with different demographics make it so there isnt a "one size fits all" formula for how much you should charge but there is a formula to figure out how much you need to charge to stay in business. Knowing how much it costs to operate your business or afford your desired lifestyle is important for determining the minimum amount of money your business needs to earn.
