President's Letter

By DJ Patterson, CD-SV, 2020 IDA President

Hello to the IDA community!

To those of you whom I have yet to meet, my name is DJ Patterson. What an incredible honor to be named as this year's President of the International Detailing Association! It seems like yesterday when I first got into this industry as a young 19-year-old starting my mobile business out of the trunk of a 1999 Ford Contour. I’ve watched this industry change tremendously, for the better, over the last decade. Let me tell you something...there has NEVER been a better time to be in the detailing industry than now!

A little background on myself  - I’m the founder of EcoGreen Mobile Detailing that is based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I am a business mentor to a lot of young start up detailers and also the co-host of an industry podcast called Pints and Polishing Podcast. I am married to my beautiful wife, Aisha, and we have three kids and a fourth child due in less than two months. Needless to say, I’ll have my hands full this year!

As I am writing this letter I am gearing up for one of the most incredible events of the year, Mobile Tech Expo! I absolutely love being around all of you amazing operators and suppliers, especially the IDA staff, board, and committee members. This year our board consists of several new board members and our very first international board member all the way from the United Kingdom, Alan Medcraf, CD-SV, RT. I couldn’t be more excited to have Alan as my Vice President of Operators! I am honored to continue the legacy of all of the past presidents and board members that made the IDA as strong as it is today. Cheers to a new and exciting year with the IDA and I want to encourage all of you reading to get involved in 2020.  Do not sit on the sidelines this year. Join a committee and use your gifts and talents to help make a positive difference in this amazing community!

I cannot wait to connect with you all throughout the year so please reach out and say hello!

Sincerely,

2020 Committees

As we begin 2020, we are extending the invitation to join one of IDA’s committees: Membership, Marketing & Communications, Chapter Development, Tradeshow & Education, and Certification. We ask that you hold a current IDA certification to join the Certification committee, but there are no requirements for joining the other committees. You may also join at any time throughout the year.

Each committee holds monthly virtual meetings where related matters and projects are discussed, planned out, and implemented.  Each committee also has their own digital project management page to track goals, progress, and share documents including meeting notes.

Please bring your big ideas and participate on a committee this year!  If you have questions before joining, you may email Stephanie Bright Barnwell, the Membership Development Specialist.

Member Spotlight

Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with IDA Founder's Club member Rod Puzey, Founder & CEO of Zenware

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?
Rod Puzey (RP):
I started out in the automotive restoration business and as a mechanic in the late 80’s and then in 2009, after starting a software company that builds an invoicing system called RoadFS, we got heavily involved in the detailing world.  I became a certified detailer to enhance my skills and bring more knowledge to the software about detailing.

IDA:
Please tell us more about your business.
RP:
We started our software company in 2009 with the idea to build a software for the auto reconditioning industry.  We still have our original two customers to this day.  We got involved with the IDA early on, sitting on a panel about technology and wanted to get more involved.  I became certified and we got even more involved each year.  This year we were invited to be Founder's Club members and we couldn’t be more excited to take on new roles to help the organization.

IDA Sponsor Spotlight

This month, we chatted with Jim Cozzie, CD-SV, RT, of 2020 IDA Diamond Sponsor The Wax Shop.

International Detailing Association: How long have you been with this company?
Jim Cozzie:
The Wax Shop launched in Summer 2018, but I have been with our parent company Turtle Wax, Inc. since April 2002.

IDA:
Were you a detailer prior to becoming a supplier?
JC:
Yes, I have been detailing for over 20 years.

IDA:
What made you switch to becoming a supplier?
JC:
Our detailing business was in need for some professional grade products, and I worked closely with our Turtle Wax R&D team to develop a revamped line of Professional Products.

IDA:
What type of training does your business offer?
JC:
Turtle Wax owns and operates two car wash and professional detailing facilities in Illinois.  We provide continuous training to our employees.  In 2020 we plan on using our experience and expertise to bring our knowledge of professional detailing to the Chicagoland area.

IDA:
What makes your company unique compared to other suppliers?
JC:
Turtle Wax is still family owned and operated for almost 75 years!

IDA:
Is there any advice you would give to detailers that may be looking into transitioning to product sales, distribution, or manufacturing?
JC:
Be open to criticism.  Listen to everyone’s suggestions, but don’t overreact.  You may feel you have a superior product, but all detailers look for different attributes.

IDA:
Will your company be attending Mobile Tech Expo?
JC:
Yes, we will be attending MTE in Orlando in January. Come see us at booth #817!

IDA:
What are some of the struggles your company has overcome to get to where it is today?
JC:
Our biggest struggle was getting detailers to try new products.  We attended SEMA in 2018 and several shows in 2019 including MTE, ICA Show, and SEMA.  We have sent out lots of samples and the feedback has been great.

IDA:
Why does your company believe it is beneficial to support the IDA?
JC:
We believe the support of the IDA is necessary because we want the industry to hold itself to high standards.  When a consumer is looking to have their vehicle detailed, it’s best they find someone who's certified.

IDA:
As a supplier, what changes would you like to see be made in the detailing industry?
JC:
I would like everyone to have an open mind.  Just because products can be found in retail locations, doesn’t always mean low quality.  Detailers should test products and find out what works best for them, and don’t always believe what you hear and read.

IDA Certification Events

As many of you already know, the “I” in IDA stands for International. What some of you may not know, is that we take the “I” very seriously when it comes to the IDA Certification Program. While the United States is buzzing with IDA activity through membership, webinars, tradeshows, meet and greets, and certification events, a lot of our members probably aren’t familiar with all of the activity going on across the pond in Europe, Asia, or even down in South America. Just to give you an idea, we currently have 171 IDA Certified Detailers outside of the United States, and of those 171 Certified Detailers, 125 of them have gone on to get their Skills Validated. Approximately 16% of the IDA’s Recognized Trainers are operating outside of the United States full-time, and that isn’t giving credit to those of our Recognized Trainers from the US that constantly travel to other countries to perform trainings.(Read more)

Cleaning Your Car - Making Maintenance Resolutions

By Matt Jackson, CD-SV
Biff's Automotive Detailing, Mesa, Arizona

Everyone is familiar with vehicle maintenance when it comes to responsibilities such as changing the oil, rotating the tires, etc. but do you view cleaning your vehicle as routine maintenance? Let's explore some reasons why you should.

A figure cited on LibertyMutual.com suggests, "Ongoing maintenance and major repairs become bigger and bigger expenses as a car gets older. An average American household can expect to spend about 1.5 percent of its annual income, or about $817 a year, on car repairs for its two (or more statistically accurate, 1.9) vehicles." (1). This is on top of the existing costs of ownership (loan, insurance, gas, etc)(Read more)

IDA Website Spotlight: Meet & Greets

Do you enjoy sharing the benefits of the IDA?  Do you love bringing people together?  Then you should host an IDA Meet and Greet!  These local and regional events are meant to bring together detailing professionals to discuss industry hot topics and encourage membership and participation in our association.

One of the biggest Meet and Greets of the year is held annually at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, and in 2019 we had our highest turnout yet!  We also held a Meet & Greet at the first annual MTE Vegas, which brought together a new group of detailers from the west coast who aren’t typically able to attend the MTE show in Florida(Read More!)
