IDA Member Spotlight: Jason Barker, CD-SV
Monday, April 22, 2019
Meet IDA Operator member Jason E. Barker, CD-SV, the owner of Fresh Start Detail Co. in Beaverton, Oregon. Jason has been in the detailing profession since 1983, and has owned Fresh Start since 1995. He joined the IDA in 2017 and earned his certification in March 2018.
Why did you join the IDA?
I've been a member of every detailing association since the PDA back in 1996. Several associations have come and gone since then, so I was reluctant to join "just another flimsy organization", but once I saw the structure and the support of real detailing professionals like myself (you know, CAREER detailers) joining and volunteering and growing the association into something solid, it was a no-brainer to join and become certified.
How do you see the IDA benefiting the detailing industry?
Like others have said, it's about separating the career detailers who strive to make this a legitimate profession that the public can trust to be honest and skilled at detailing cars from the overnight fly-by-night "wash-bucket Willys" who've tarnished this industry for too long. It's about creating a profitable business environment for honest, hard-working folks.
How has the IDA helped you personally as a detailer and business owner?
It allows me to advertise how I am different from my non-certified competitors by showing that I take the initiative to educate myself and stay up on the latest technology to ensure a professional experience for my clients.
The IDA has also helped eliminate the mentality of detailers being "solo warriors" who don't share or help fellow shop owners due to fear of competition or because of ignorance and/or arrogance. There is a sense of sharing information within our industry now that helps all of us. This gives detailers confidence to boost prices higher than their less-devoted competitors and stand behind those prices when questioned by price-shopping clients.
Why do you think other detailers and suppliers should join the IDA?
If they're serious about making this a career, then the choice is obvious to join the IDA. If they can't see the value within five minutes of perusing www.the-ida.com, then these are the exact people we are trying to separate ourselves from within our industry.
