Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we spoke with IDA Board Member, Oscar Hernandez, CD-SV. He is also the owner of Eight O Five Detail Shop. International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry? Oscar Hernandez (OH): I got into the detailing industry because of my passion for cars. After I left the Marine Corps, I knew I didn’t want a regular job. Detailing was an opportunity to learn a new skill. IDA: Tell us more about your business. OH: I started my business in 2018 and quickly got involved with the IDA and the Detail Mafia. Whatever I do, I do 100% and I knew it was important to get the best education possible. I also got involved with the Ventura Chamber of Commerce and several non-profits in my community. I knew I wanted to give back through the business. IDA: In what products or services does your company specialize? OH: We specialize in ceramic coatings, paint enhancement, and window tinting. The waterless wash is important to my business because we are a green-certified business. IDA: What do you think is the most important factor to being successful in the detailing industry? OH: The most important factor to a detailers success is being trustworthy. It’s important to be ethical in this business and to have a commitment to quality. IDA: Are there any awards/certifications/accomplishments that you or your business has earned and would like to share with us? OH: Eight O Five Detail Shop won the Ventura Chamber of Commerce 2019 Small Business of the Year. I won a 2020 Pacific Coast Business Times 40 under 40 award, and I received a California Green Business Certification. IDA: What is the best advice you ever received? OH: The best business advice I ever received was to give back and it will come back ten-fold. That has definitely been the case in my community. IDA: What tips do you have for the new detailer? For the experienced detailer? OH: For the new detailer, I would advise you to perfect the trade and invest in your education. For the experienced detailer, I would recommend finding a community organization, such as your local chamber of commerce or a non-profit to give back to. IDA: What is your funniest business moment? OH: My funniest business moment has to be tied to some of the jobs that people think I can do as a car detailer. For instance, installing a truck bed cover, removing an opossum from a retail store, taking out seats of a completely burned-out car, and more. I said YES every time. IDA: Why did you decide to get involved with the IDA? OH: I got involved in the IDA because I knew that the education it provided would make me the best in my community. IDA: How has your involvement with the IDA affected your business and your career? OH: When people find out I’m a member of the IDA, they know that they are getting a quality product and that I am invested in the newest and best innovation in the industry.
