Congratulations to the winner of the 2022 Detailer of the Year Award, Brian Finn, CD-SV, MC, RIT. This award is presented to a detailing technician who has demonstrated superior knowledge, technical skill, and professionalism. We had a chance to speak with Brian to learn more about what this recognition means to him.

Brian Finn

International Detailing Association (IDA): What does this accomplishment mean to you?
Brian Finn (BF): Winning Detailer of the Year means so much to me in so many ways. In business, we strive to be recognized by our employer, our coworkers, our customers, our peers, and most of all, our families. This award is so special, because it took all those people together to win it and that feels amazing.

IDA: How long have you been in the industry? How did you get involved?
BF: I have been in the industry for over 28 years. I started at the age of 13. My father woke me up and said I had two choices. I could clean the kitchen or wash and wax his car, so I chose his car. It turned out good, and he told me I had a touch for cleaning cars. My first major job detailing was with a paint overspray removal company that my friend Marc got me hooked up with. It was a 3000-car claim at Volkswagen of America.

IDA: Who inspires you the most in this industry?
BF: I don’t think I could name just one person since I have met many inspiring industry professionals. They all have impacted me in different ways. I would say the industry as a whole inspires me to keep improving my skills and giving back to detailers as much as I can.

IDA: What would you say is the key to your ongoing growth and success in this industry?
BF: I firmly believe that the key to my success in the industry is the support of my family. My wife, Alicia, has always been by my side. She has not only worked with me but also encourages me daily. My daughter, Briana (@detailingprodigy), helps me at the shop and already has a passion for detailing at the age of 5. My high level of quality has also kept me successful. I never sacrifice quality no matter what. Even if I lose money on a job, I always make sure my quality is high. I never cut corners and I always try to give the customer more than they expected. I would also have to credit my success to customer service. Having outstanding customer service will always make you successful.

As far as growth goes, I never stop learning, and I make sure to take advice from people seriously. You never know what you might learn, even from the newest detailer in the business.

IDA: What words of wisdom would you like to impart to your fellow detailers?
BF: I would say first and foremost, join the IDA and get certified. Keep your quality up, and don’t cut corners. Always make sure you have a system and stick to it. Never give up. There will always be ups and downs with detailing, and you will most likely have to switch paths several times to stay alive in this industry. But don’t get down and give up. Power through and you can do great things. Maybe even be Detailer of the Year.
