Congratulations to the winner of the 2023 Detailer of the Year Award, Billy Smith, CD-SV! This award is presented to a detailing technician who has demonstrated superior knowledge, technical skill, and professionalism. We had a chance to speak with Billy to learn more about what this recognition means to him.
International Detailing Association (IDA): What does this accomplishment mean to you? Billy Smith (BS): Being named Detailer of the Year has been a goal of mine since joining the IDA. I always try to be a positive influence on the younger detailers coming up in our industry. IDA: How long have you been in the industry? How did you get involved? BS: I have been in the detailing industry for 37 years. 23 of those years, I have been in business for myself. My aunt ran a detail shop for many years. I would work with her on weekends as a young boy. I fell in love with detailing and knew that’s what I wanted to do as a career. When I started my business, I knew I needed to stand above other shops in our area. So, I decided to join the IDA and start training on all aspects of detailing. IDA: Who inspires you the most in this industry? BS: I have developed many friendships over the years, and hands-down Dustin Jackson, CD-SV, WC, is one of the people who has inspired me the most. Not only has his company, Detail Bookie, changed how we do business, but I have built a friendship that will last a lifetime. IDA: What would you say is the key to your ongoing growth and success in this industry? BS: I mentor a lot of young detailers and try to help them avoid the mistakes I’ve made. I go to tradeshows, which is very important. I also network at those events. I have built a lot of great relationships with detailers and manufacturers. Finally, I try to stay on top of all the newest and latest developments in our industry. IDA: What words of wisdom would you like to impart to your fellow detailers? BS: Get out there and start networking. Also, training is very important. Become a problem solver and add value to the detailing community. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the great mentors that have helped me along the way.
