Each month we feature a Member Spotlight. This month we're talking with the chair of the Membership Committee, Joseph DiFiore, CD-SV, owner of DiFiore's Auto Detailing in Norwich, Connecticut.

International Detailing Association (IDA): How did you get into the detailing industry?
Joseph DiFiore (JD): In 1984 I started cleaning and waxing cars in my backyard in Norwich, Ct. Then in 1987 I built a garage in my backyard, the phone kept ringing and I kept filling orders for clean and shine. I quit my job in Spring of 1988 and never looked back.
IDA: Tell us a bit about your business.
JD: Cleaning my father’s car was one of my chores growing up. I cleaned and waxed cars as a side business in Cleveland, Ohio from 1978 to 1979. Then in 1984 I started a home based side detailing business in Norwich, CT with just $50. Finally was able to open DiFiore's Auto Detailing full time in 1988. Detailing for me is all about lifestyle and freedom.
IDA: What products or services does DiFiore's Auto Detailing specialize in?
JD: We specialize in scratch repair along with color filling, smoke/odor removal, and restoration detailing.
IDA: What do you think is the most important factor to being successful in the detailing industry?
JD: Consistency, perseverance, keeping it simple, and marketing, marketing, marketing!
IDA: Are there any awards/certifications/accomplishments that you or your business has earned and would like to share with us?
JD: In 1991 was awarded the Southeastern Connecticut Entrepreneur of the Year. Then in 2018 received the IDA Outstanding Service Award.
IDA: What is the best advice you ever received?
JD: Always pay yourself first, save a minimum of 20% of your gross pay, invest, and don’t forget to smell the roses.
IDA: What tips do you have for the new detailer?
JD: Be proficient with accounting skills and tax strategies. Never operate from a position of need, operate from a position of want and choice.
IDA: For the experienced detailer?
JD: Don’t forget to work on your bucket list.
IDA: Funniest business moment?
JD: 1993 Ford Thunderbird automatic seat belt return wrapped around a women’s head while she was getting out of her car with her hands full and she became trapped in the car until I was able to help her. First I had to stop laughing!
IDA: Why did you decide to get involved with the IDA?
JD: Promote the industry and detailing professionalism.
IDA: How has your involvement with the IDA affected your business and your career?
JD: It has been a great resource for continuing detailing business education, and a great outlet to give back to others and the detailing industry.
