Microfiber towels have become indispensable tools in the auto detailing industry due to their exceptional cleaning abilities and versatility. These towels are made of densely woven synthetic fibers, typically composed of polyester and polyamide (nylon), which are significantly finer than human hair. Microfiber towels are known for their ability to trap dirt, dust, and moisture effectively. However, to maintain their performance and prolong their lifespan, proper washing and care are essential. Understanding Microfiber Towels

Before diving into the washing process, it is crucial to understand the science behind microfiber towels. Their remarkable cleaning properties arise from the unique structure of their fibers. Microfiber is characterized by its ultra-fine threads, typically less than one denier in diameter. This small diameter, combined with the dense packing of fibers, creates a high surface area for capturing and holding particles and liquids. The splitting of microfiber strands during manufacturing further enhances their cleaning abilities. Each strand is split into numerous microscopic fibers, creating a network of tiny hooks and loops that trap dirt and absorb liquids. This structure allows microfiber towels to clean surfaces with minimal effort and without the need for chemical cleaners. Imagine microfiber with a lot of tiny fingers attached to numerous hands. Think of the dexterity!

Proper Detergent for Washing

Many folks think that a general-purpose laundry soap will work. I’ve seen shops buying buckets of powdered detergent to save money and cut costs. But these powders do not break down! Microfiber towels end up doing the job they are designed for and trap all that powder in the fibers of the towel, ruining an entire load of towels. Would you use them on soft black paint after that? I wouldn’t.

Other folks use laundry detergent in their home. This detergent is normally designed to remove food and sweat stains out of clothing and loaded with fabric softeners and fragrances. These are left behind in the towels, making them streaky when they encounter water or become less absorbent! Thus, ruining the towel and its effectiveness.

We recommend, as other microfiber manufacturers do, using a microfiber specific liquid detergent. There are many available on the market, and they are designed to help clean the fibers and remove the chemicals, dressings, and sealants used in detailing every day. Many could increase the longevity of the towel when used with that detergent and proper washing.

Washing Microfiber Towels: Dos and Don'ts

To maintain the highest level of effectiveness in microfiber towels, it is imperative to follow the correct washing and care guidelines:

• Separate by Use: Microfiber towels used for different purposes should be washed separately. For instance, towels used for cleaning glass should be washed separately from those used for automotive detailing to prevent cross-contamination.
• NO Fabric Softeners and Bleach: Fabric softeners and bleach can damage the microfiber structure and reduce its cleaning efficiency. Use either a Free & Clear detergent or a microfiber specific detergent instead. These are properly formulated for this fabric and the chemicals we use in detailing.
• Wash in Cold/Warm Water: Microfiber towels can be safely washed in cold or warm water, but NEVER hot water, as it can damage the fibers.
• Use a Gentle or Delicate Cycle: Choose a wash cycle with a low spin speed to prevent excessive wear and tear on the fabric.
• Avoid Overloading: Do not overload the washing machine, as overcrowding can prevent proper agitation and cleaning.
• NO Dryer Sheets: Dryer sheets can leave residues on microfiber towels, diminishing their cleaning abilities. Instead, air-dry the towels or use a low heat setting in the dryer. 
• NO Fabric Softener: Fabric softeners can clog the microfiber's tiny fibers, reducing their cleaning effectiveness. Stick with microfiber specific detergent only.
• Keep your Washer Clean: Clean your washing machine regularly to prevent detergent and lint buildup, which can affect the cleanliness of your towels.
• LOW or NO Heat Drying: Use the low or no heat setting on your dryer or hang dry your towels. Using high heat causes the fibers to dry out and become arthritic, making them less dexterous in cleaning and unable to dry as effectively.
• Inspect for Damage: Regularly inspect your microfiber towels for damage. If you notice fraying, snags, or excessive wear, it might be time to replace them.
