President's Letter - October 2018
Monday, October 29, 2018
As this letter “goes to press”, we are in the midst of SEMA. The main reason to go to SEMA has dramatically changed from 10 years ago. Back then, you went to SEMA to see all the new stuff in the automotive world. Nowadays, you still go to SEMA for that, but also to mingle with the hundreds of detailing industry folks that attend — detailing business owners, distributors, manufacturers, and suppliers.
This is one of the perks of membership in the International Detailing Association. The IDA movement has brought detailers and detailing suppliers together into a community that is supportive instead of competitive. It’s fascinating, for example, to see the lead sales manager of one popular polisher chatting and shaking hands with the sales crew in the booth of another popular polisher! I doubt this would have happened 10 years ago.
SEMA has become one of our annual gathering places. It is a place where we can chat among old friends and make new ones. It’s a place where we can meet the people behind some of our favorite detailing chemicals, equipment, and supplies. We can find out what’s new and get questions answered. SEMA is also a place to meet some of the leadership in the IDA, as a number of current and past IDA Board Members, as well as Committee Chairs, typically attend.
Additionally, some of the IDA Supplier Members really throw down with some great after-hours gatherings that allow us to further enhance relationships with fellow industry members.
You might be wondering why I’m going on and on about SEMA, since there’s no way to get there in time as of this letter. Well, I’m going to encourage you to stay close to the IDA website for upcoming events that are attended by IDA members so that you can take advantage of opportunities that are similar to those happening at SEMA. The next one that you need to be at is Mobile Tech Expo in Florida, January 10-12, 2019. And, of course, plan on attending SEMA next year!
