Each month, we shine a spotlight on an IDA Sponsor. This month we spoke with Rick Goldstein, President of RAGGTOPP/SOFTTOPP/WOLFSTEINS/BIMINI TOPP, an IDA Platinum Sponsor.

International Detailing Association (IDA): How long have you been with RAGGTOPP? Were you a detailer prior to becoming a supplier?
Rick Goldstein (RG): I have been with WOLFSTEINS PRO-SERIES for 20 years. I was not a professional detailer prior to working here.

IDA: What type of training does your business offer?
RG: WOLFSTEINS PRO-SERIES provides easy-do-it yourself instructions, marketing, and POP via print, video, or group instruction. We are available for one-on-one appointment(s) by phone or internet video and groups.

IDA: What are some of your company’s attributes that make you stand out in the industry?
RG: WOLFSTEINS PRO-SERIES is exclusively tested and endorsed by The HAARTZ Corporation, an original equipment manufacturer of convertible topping for virtually every American and European convertible manufactured throughout the world, including SUV Jeep toppings and tonneau covers.

IDA: Is there any advice you would give to detailers that may be looking into transitioning to product sales, distribution, or manufacturing?
RG: One product in a thousand makes it from concept to market. Asking questions costs you nothing and you get back great advice and information that could save you time and money. Test, test, and test your products and services with customers, not your friends. Learn from your mistakes and move on. Don't be motivated by greed.

IDA: What are some of the struggles your company has overcome to get to where it is today?
RG: The biggest struggle we had, in the beginning, was educating the industry about cleaning and protecting convertible toppings. Tunnel washes knew very little about convertible toppings and did not want to hear anything about handwashing fabric or vinyl toppings. In fact, the majority did not have anyone on their staff experienced and only knew to send the car through the tunnel wash and take your chances. Convertibles made a big comeback in the automotive industry in the ‘90s and every major brand had or was adding a one to their line.

IDA: Why does your company believe it is beneficial to support the IDA?
RG: The IDA supports and provides a forum for members to share ideas and develop new ways to improve the industry. The training, education, networking, information, and relationships they provide are crucial to members. We strongly believe in the IDA Certification program for its members. Not only do these certifications make for better in the industry, but they are also an absolute necessity for a business to compete. IDA certification provides a level of prestige and reliability in the minds of customers that is invaluable. IDA allows owners, operators, and its members to get into the trenches to better understand the day-to-day issues they face.

IDA: As a supplier, what changes would you like to see made in the detailing industry?
RG: I would like to see an increase in the sharing of information to help the detailing industry see why change is always going to be necessary to stay on top. I encourage participation with IDA members and make communication a two-way process for attracting new members. The detailing industry will see a fundamental shift in how its leaders view progressive change — from unrealized vision to practical reality. As a result, a detailing industry that's nimbler and more flexible will emerge. I believe the industry will evolve for the better, with strong membership steering it through the years to come.
